How to Open an ICS File Without Importing It
An ICS file is a portable calendar file. Opening it should mean looking at the events; importing it means adding those events to a calendar account. Many devices blur that distinction, so a double-click can take you straight to an import screen when all you wanted was a preview.

The fastest safe method
Open the file in an ICS viewer that reads it locally. A viewer turns calendar properties into a readable agenda but does not connect to Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar. In calendr.events, the file stays in the current browser tab and is cleared when that workspace is closed or refreshed.
Choose the file, check the calendar name and event count, then browse the dates, times, locations and repeat information. Nothing is added to a calendar until you separately download or import a file yourself.

Open versus import
An ordinary ICS file is usually a snapshot. Importing it does not create an ongoing connection to its source. A subscription is different: the calendar application periodically retrieves a hosted ICS URL and may receive later changes.

Ways to read an ICS file on each device
- Windows: right-click the file and choose a plain-text editor, or use a browser-based viewer for a readable agenda. Double-clicking commonly hands the file to Outlook or another calendar app.
- Mac: select the file and use Quick Look or open it in a text editor. Opening it with Calendar is intended for importing its events.
- iPhone or iPad: attachment and Files previews may emphasize adding the events. A local browser viewer is clearer when you only want to inspect them.
- Android: file behavior varies by device and installed apps. A browser viewer avoids depending on a calendar app's import flow.

What the raw file looks like
ICS is a text representation of the iCalendar standard. The calendar is wrapped in VCALENDAR lines, and most appointments are stored as VEVENT components. SUMMARY is normally the title, DTSTART is the start, and UID identifies the event across revisions.

What to check before importing
If you need field-by-field detail, use an ICS inspector. If you need to change or remove an event, use an editor and save a separate copy rather than changing the original file blindly.
- Does the number of events match what you expected?
- Are timed events in the right timezone, especially around daylight-saving changes?
- Is a repeating event one series, or hundreds of separately stored events?
- Does the file contain unexpected attendees, organizers, URLs, attachments or alarms?
- Are there warnings about invalid dates, missing identifiers or broken calendar structure?

Can I open an ICS file without Outlook?
Yes. An ICS file is plain text, and a local viewer can display it as an agenda without Outlook or any calendar account.
Does viewing an ICS file add events to Google Calendar?
No. Viewing and importing are separate actions. calendr.events reads the selected file in the browser tab and does not connect to Google Calendar.
Is it safe to open an unknown ICS attachment?
Preview it before importing and do not follow unfamiliar links or attachments stored inside it. A calendar file can contain event descriptions, URLs, attendees and reminders in addition to dates.
