How to Import ICS into Google, Outlook and Apple Calendar

Importing an ICS file copies a calendar snapshot into a destination calendar. It normally does not keep that calendar synchronized with its source. Preview and validate the file first, create a temporary destination calendar when possible, and import each file only once.

Import ICS into Google Calendar

If Google exported your calendars as a ZIP, extract it first and import each contained ICS file separately. Google says imported events do not stay synchronized between accounts; calendar sharing is more suitable when ongoing synchronization is required. Its import help also notes that guests and conference data are not imported with an event.

Import ICS into Outlook on the web

Microsoft distinguishes uploading a file from subscribing from the web. Uploading imports a snapshot that does not receive source updates. Subscribing uses an online calendar URL and refreshes according to the calendar service's schedule.

Import ICS into Apple Calendar on Mac

Apple documents ICS import as a way to transfer events to an existing calendar. Exporting all calendars as an Apple calendar archive is a different backup workflow from exporting one calendar as ICS.

If the import fails or looks wrong

  • Processed zero events: check whether the first import already succeeded, then validate the file.
  • File too large: split it into smaller ICS files while keeping recurrence families together.
  • Wrong times: compare the source timezone, destination-calendar timezone and the file's UTC/TZID/floating values.
  • Broken repeating events: inspect RRULE, EXDATE and RECURRENCE-ID relationships.
  • Duplicates: stop re-importing, use a duplicate finder on the source files, and test in a disposable destination calendar.

Keep a rollback path

Calendar providers do not always offer a single undo button for a bulk file import. A dedicated destination calendar is the simplest rollback: if the result is wrong, remove that calendar rather than finding and deleting every imported event individually.

Keep the original file and a note of the import date until you have verified event counts, timezones, all-day spans, reminders and several recurring exceptions.
